About My Tags

I don’t remember anyone growing up that had food allergies, do you? We lived on peanut butter and jelly and you might not like everything, but I don’t ever remember food threatening people’s lives like it does today. In my son’s class alone, one is allergic to all nuts, one has to have gluten-free, and mine is allergic to all red meat. There are so many different food allergies now and it seems like new ones are developing every week. When deciding to do this blog for people with alpha-gal, I wanted to make it friendly for families who are simultaneously addressing other food issues as well. With the help of the mother whose son is allergic to all nuts (thank you Linda!), I decided to “tag” all my recipes like the current labeling laws from the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004. The following 8 allergens are required to be identified:

1. Milk

2. Eggs

3. Fish (i.e.: bass, flounder, cod)

4. Shellfish (i.e.: crab, lobster, shrimp)

5. Tree nuts (i.e.: almonds, walnuts, pecans)

6. Peanuts

7. Wheat

8. Soybeans

Every recipe in this blog will be free of any red meat. Many of the recipes here may satisfy other food allergies as well. Thus my “tags” will be “milk free”, “peanut free”, “soy free”, etc. based on the above 8 allergens. That being said and because each person’s food sensitivities and reactions are unique, it is up to the consumer to monitor ingredients and manufacturing conditions. If manufacturing conditions, potential cross-contamination between foods, and ingredient derivatives, pose a risk for you or someone in your family, please reread all food labels and call the manufacturer to confirm potential allergen concerns before consumption. Sadly, ingredients and manufacturing practices can change overnight and without warning these days.

I am happy to expand this list if necessary. Please let me know if there is a specific food allergen you would like for me to address and I will do my best.
